Is there any merit in playing friendlies before competitive matches (assuming you have the kits to use)?

For example, any old wives tales about getting players In the Zone or getting bad performances out the way or other fanciful notions regarding fooling the trolls.

I noticed few days ago that my league leader always plays a friendly before a league game so was wondering if anyone else does this?
