Tanking

Not something I've done or even considered up to this point, but having gained only 1 point from three games in the new season I've began to think what's the point of playing properly when the game is so unrealistic?

My team is very close to 5* quality yet I've lost to two teams at 2* overall quality. What's more, most of my players are getting 5 and 6 ratings in games where they're far superior in class to their opponents. Everything about my team suggests that a Top 4 finish should be the minimum I can achieve but it's annoyed me that nothing I can do will alter my fortunes.

I'm tempted to tank for the first time ever and attempt to come back next season as a 6* quality side.

Heed this warning, tanking is becoming a thing of the past as they have become aware of us doing it and are promoting clubs finishing below 7th to make up numbers where they don't have enough clubs in leagues, also with the new update on the phone platform they are auto putting in your skill points so u cannot save them up and it looks like it is only a matter of time before this comes over to desktop platform

My Celtic is playing in league of 13x 5* teams. I've noticed some of teams were on same level last season. If they had wanted to gain some quallity advantage through tanking, they failed for sure. All teams have similar Q and after 3rd league round none of them has 3 wins. Now they can tank one season more 'cause league is very though, but that won't secure them 1st position next season. So I think that game creators found way to prevent tanking for stronger teams. For weaker teams (2-3* average quallity) it is still useful because they need time to get stronger, but for 5* teams it isn't anymore.

I have 5 accounts and am tanking 4 of them this season. I usually have a fight with one of them as they try to come in 7th and I have to invent ways to lose. If you feel you cant compete, tank. build up for next season and have 50% of your team as scouts. I do it EVERY season. next season I will only have one team tank and then it becomes a pain because I have so many more games to care about. When you tank, you build up on reds, blues and greens as you really dont have to use them. I would use the reds because if you dont, you miss out on skill points. but tanking means you really dont have to.

I have a theory, and so far it rings true, that you get put in leagues where almost everyone is the same quality if you come in top 4. when you tank or dont get promoted, you get put in a weaker league. therefore it pays to tank. My account that tanked last season is 104Q now with 7 scouts and 5 more a few skill points from scout. 12 out of 20 players scout quality or close to it. not bad. the next best in my leagueis 101.2Q and the rest are below 100Q with many in the 92Q-95Q.

so if you do plan on tanking, go full tilt, dont waver. try it and if you dont like it next season what have to you lose other than one season? its a game, not something you will lose your firstborn son on. Just try to come in last and that will be the new "first".

and even when they auto-assign skill points on the PC version I will still tank by playing OOP and dumb instructions....and then we will see if they even matter.

Hi, a tanked season is always a failure and a waste of time,don't forget it.

Moreover,I failed level 5 twice,so now I could have been at level 24,rather than level 22,
though my manager carrier hasn't been so bad from that moment.

My actual league is very hard,but I want to be promoted,possibly from 1 to 4 place,
but even 5,6 or 7 place should be ok.

At the moment I'm at the 5 position,at -3 points from the 3 leaders.
Today I defeated away 2-4 one of these leaders.
I won against 3 of the 4 teams that are ahead of me (3 victories and 1 defeat),but I was stopped by 3 teams behind me (1 victory, 2 draws and 1 defeat).


I have been changing and enforcing my team little by little,and results are starting to improve.
Even a 0-0 result may be good against a strong team,since each team may be stopped by another one.

I'd never arrange a whole season to arrive at 8 or lower positions.....

Perhaps this partially explains how my league wound up in a league where 13 out of 14 were 5* or better at the start of the season, yet only a few actually were promoted legitimately.

I think it sucks that they are grouping us by quality in league now. I don't know it for sure but there's enough evidence pointing that way that it's looking like it.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what 'Tanking' is?

not entirely true. your first sentence is true, but you dont have to play illegal formations to lose. It helps, but really, you can swap an ST with your GK and that helps even more than an illegal formation.

Well then that is the difference between me and you. You see, I tank every second season and I now have 14 scouts(6*) and 1 world class(7*) in my team of 22 players, the rest are 5*

It may be considered a waste of time, but if you think of it as a team building venture, it is totally worth it. It wont guarantee I will win the next season at all, but it gives me a hell of an excellent chance considering I will be put in a weaker league because I finished the season is such a low position.

Tank and be proud of it.

It's fine if it is fair for other managers in your league. Maybe using a consistent (and weak) formation, not applying skill points, or at least consistently ignoring your team.

There are different forms of tanking. One way is to deceive T11 in to thinking you have a poor team and get into a league where you can win. The other,which I have employed, is to get promoted and then not improve your team for a couple of seasons. The reason I did that was because I did not have the tokens or money to improve my team. I spent a couple of seasons resting on my laurels until my money and tokens were sufficient to build a new team to be competitive. Is that tanking?

Is it tanking or a consolidation season?

It has happened to me, I have missed out on promotion in a very tight league on the last day. After kicking furniture and swearing at the the cat, I take a look at my opposition the next season and cruise to victory.

I've not deliberately thrown a match (yet), but there's a lot to be said for staying down for a season.

no, buying tokens to better your team is for losers and cheats. If you cant do it with the daily tokens and ads, then you are a cheat and a loser, not necessarily in that order. Any other way is just ingenuity and smart thinking.

how else do you suggest that one competes in a game where spending money gives you a better team? If I can find a way to have a better team without spending money, how is that cheating? we are not manipulating the game or how it works. We are not using external applications to change things. We are just losing on purpose to stay on the same level and build the team over 2-3 years. People who buy tokens can do that instantly, so I repeat, how is tanking considered cheating?

And I do have to admit that cheaters are losers, but losers are not necessarily cheaters.

And believe me, I do enjoy the game much more when I have a great team ready to compete. Sure, we all love to cheer for the underdog, but who wants to always be the underdog?

and I just love your nonsense example with golf. Golf is a real game where there are rules and everyone knows them and they all know how to play the game. T11, is not like golf. Sure you have rules, but they dont explain the game and its rules to the point where everyone knows what is what. Nobody is "chopping strokes" as you say. They are purposly shanking and missing putts so they dont get promoted. Consider it "practice"...we prefer to stay on the course and get better at it before we win it.

I still cant believe there are people out there bitching about tanking. It is a fair thing to do. Some call it unsportsman-like, but then again, so it buying tokens and using them to make your players better.

So just leave tankers alone and take your own advice: enjoy the game FFS :p

LOL I am the example of a successful tanking manager, that won 11 CL's of consecutive levels and 12 leagues of 17 different levels without stress... well yea, I was buying 176T some seasons just 4-5 or so too, because I liked that way really.

If we have to discuss here what is "cheat", will be a waste of time... really thats a game and everyone have to enjoy it playing like he wants.
We can say that is a cheat, if you buy and I don't, if I tank and you don't, if you win leagues because you add lower Q. teams of your level as friends to have easy groups, if you decrease Q. of the team to have a easy level cup, if you win a T11 contest and you win 500Tokens, if you are moderator, if you are a developer..... if I am in Spain and can see only 2 videos per day but you in UK can see 100 and obtain 100 greens or 100T too is inclusive more interesting because you dont need to tank... so¿?

A fair game, ...really is a good place where to start.... because, did anyone know a game in what you can not do strategy to have a benefit in some sense?.. no. then, just enjoy people.


Tanking or do somethings that Ive mentioned in the list, is like to play with a bigger ball.

Its always the same in games - "F2P are no-life leechers" or "P2W are no-brain whales" depending on where you are. All are just people looking for entertainment, except ofc Khris ;) , and f2p games need them all to survive. Its up to the devs to ensure that both exist and contribute.

I agree, there is no "cheat" in the game and ofc it's not "fair".
Some people tanking but not have a serial of titles
Some people have a lot of time to spend while others not.
Some people know english and have more info (from forum) while others don't.
Some people can farm a little, some more, some none.
Some buying T, some others can't or don't want.
Some are grown ups and have a job while other players are juniors or unemployed.
Some get paid 500$ /month , others 3.000$/month

It's just a game or a hobby for somebody and everyone must enjoy it with his personal way of playing.
There is no "best" manager/player.

But football itself isn't a fair game. Barcelona or Real Madrid doesn't play the game with equal way (money,advertising, bank loans) but still can loose from Athletic Bilbao or the championship from Atletico Madrid. Ofc I prefer to watch them on tv and not At.Bilbao :)

When I was level 16 I pretty much had no motivation to play the game. What I did was login only once each day, and TOTALLY NOT USING ANY TOKEN. My self-imposed limit was so complete that at one time my team only had one foreign player, everyone else was spawned from my academy.

My money grow to 2.1b max in less than 3 seasons once I sold out all but one of my foreign players, and the max cash stayed there for many seasons to come. I wish I could buy something without using token, there is none so I end up paying max bonus to the players in every game. Still, it just won't drop, as youths are very cheap to use and I have to sell 2 players per season due to new academy spawns.

From there I learned many things by playing a low quality team. With 5~15q deficit for nearly every game, I perfected my tactics and managed to level up once every 2 seasons.

Despite being a 35-token player with no farming, eventually I have enough tokens and money to buy a whole team of scouts. But what did I do?

I bought 5 players for 5 tokens and proceed to win the league with it.
There is nothing more satisfying than consistantly beating teams full of 5* and a few scouts using mostly 4* players.:D

Now I don't buy scouts like I once had, it will spoil my fun:cool:

I have never tanked. I don't buy tokens, never spent a penny on this game. Take it season to season, using the daily tokens and ads, and seem to be pretty successful. I don't need 2-3 seasons to 'rebuild'!

Plus I didn't say this game is like golf. I used golf because when you cheat in golf you're just cheating yourself....and if you're going to tank and win the league every 3 seasons because you 'cheated' your way into an inferior league, then you're cheating yoursel also....

how many T and boosters are you farming every season ?

Not that many to be honest....I don't get caught up in bidding wars, I don't have a high turn over of players, and usually the boosters I get normally are enough, if anything I probably farm the injury boosters more than the others, and that's still no that much. I don't power train. Right now I have 53 tokens, none of which have been farmed....

you focused on the most non-important point: golf, and neglected to really address the main point which was that tanking is NOT cheating, unless you also agree that using tokens to increase the quality of your team is also cheating. But even if you tank, it is not cheating, no matter what, simply because you are choosing not to progress to the next level. It may be viewed as unsportsmanlike, but it is 100% not cheating. Using tokens, on the other hand, to increase skills is 100% cheating. It is giving an advantage that the majority do not choose to use because it uses real money in a free game.

Using Tokens is part of the game. that's what they are there for. Whether you choose to buy them (which I dont) or use the ones you are given, also watching videos or downloading apps, this are all legit....Tanking however, is purposely losing to gain an advantage, which I would consider, a form of cheating. I don't want to compare this game to real football, because most of the time it doesn't compare, but a lot of people make the comparison, and so taking that into account, how many managers, in the real world, deliberately lose....?
And as I said before, where's the fun and fulfillment in purposely losing for a season or 2, just so you may win 3 seasons later, in an inferior league....Face it Bubba, it's a form of cheating....!

I think that as everybody has a personal style of playing the game, has a personal view about such things.

But when I see some cases, I just call it ridiculous - like last seasons league of a friend of mine

Tanking isn't cheating or exploiting....its an intended feature. Changes to things that affect it are not to stop it - they call it balancing >.< f2p games developers now that an important aspect alongside cash spend is population - the bigger f2p players swell the population the more competitive the environment for friends of Shirley B.

In f2p games in general you have time and money and folks find their own balance.

Unless you actually think that shiny trophies in the game actually mean something beyond an entertaining foot-note.

The only caution against ppl spending cash on too many T is that most then end up quitting. #harpooned

I don't understand the problem with tankers and token buyers.

Without tanking, it detracts from the game play experience of a large percentage of the player pool. Smaller player pool equals less players that can influence other people to play. Tanking also allows managers to step away from the game for a couple/few months and come back with what should be a competitive team for 2/3 seasons.

Without token buyers, there is no game.

One of the things I do like about this game is the many ways people can decide to play it.

Tanking is def not cheating and anyone who thinks it is is an ignorant fool. Tanking is a strategy. And there you go comparing it to real life, when this is simply a game. not many managers purposely lose, but then, they have a real team with real people and they wont purposely lose unless they are bent and are told to lose to win money. T11 managers, on the other hand, are put at a disadvantage because their players lose a star each time they are promoted, forcing one to either spend tokens to increase quality or play with what you got, which may or may not be competitive, depending on the league.

IF someone wants to purposely lose so they can build their team into something competitive, how is that cheating? This is a game and it is a strategy. I dont want to spend money on tokens and I dont farm tokens or packs. So I either tank or sit bottom or middle of the pack with an ever decreasing quality team.

and the fun and fulfillment in purposely losing is knowing that next season you will have a much better team as well as a crapload more reds/blues/greens and tokens because they were not needed. Sully, you are 100% right about tanking, I completely agree with you on that. It's not cheating at all, it's a fine strategy that some managers choose to play with. From my second team, I remember back in level 2 or 3, I saw a guy who has a different strategy. At the season start, he brought in like all the scout players. At the end of the season, he only kept 15 of them and sold the rest, then bought 7 players with 3*. By doing so, he knocked his team rating down as low as possible. He has done it repeatedly season to season, he blowed out his opponents, took home all the trophies. I was one of his victims. hahaha.

My strategy is half the same like him; actually, I must admit I copied half of his strategy. I buy young players from bidding war, train them and let them sit there at 1 SP away from 6* player, them tank the rest for next season. Back then, I could tank over 2K skill points for each season. Soon the season end, I keep 15 key players then sell the rest and buy in 7 players with the lowest rate from the market. This is an only way that I can compete in Cup and stay a head in the game. Even with my good strategy, until this day, I still lose from left to right in this Cup tournament.

As you can see from the screenshot below, my current team Barca FC have to face this guy from level 18 in Cup. As the schedule released, his team rating was 97.8, he brought in 3-4 world class players (to me, those players are world class because I am only level 16, but to him, they are just a 5* players)...his team rating went up to 101. As soon I saw he has added those players into his roster, I trained my players to get the higher rating with green pack since I can't tank any more. Some how, I managed to beat him at home 4-0. Today, when I checked his squads, he again bought in 3 more 7* defense players. Now, I have to train my players even hard to match with his players. Amazingly, if he updates his team, I will easily see his team rating at 108 or 109.

Any way, do you see the point here? Planning and strategy are part of the game if you want real competition. Every body has his/her point of view, but tanking is NOT cheating at all. PERIOD!!!

Well I guess the balance is pretty close, people who think its ok and people who dont. Personally, I think its a form of cheating. Thats my personal opinion, and the opinion of many others. But as I say, many people think it's not, so mebbies this is a situation we can agree to disagree....
But it's not cheating to buy tokens if you want, just because there are fools in the world who want to throw there money away, doesnt make it cheating. I mean you cant say Man U are cheating because they have more money than, say, West ham, and like to throw is away on idiots.

I guess if you buy correctly, look for the right players, yes there is always some duds, but more often than not, if you're smart in the transfer market, you can find good players that play well for many seasons. I have never been out of the top 2 positions in the league at the end of the season, so always being competitive. The CL and Cup i shrug my shoulders, especially the cup, even if you do have a far superior team, it's still a lottery most of the time. Anyhoo the league is the most important to win.

So it is possible to be competitive 'every' season, without tanking or buying tokens....but I guess 'horses for courses'....right?

It amazes me that people that think delibrately losing is cheating . The way the game is set-up means long term you cant compete against token buyers. So you have to use strategy . Hell i had to lose 3 season to get to be competitive.

I have been on this forum for over 2 years and the majority know it is not cheating. But whatever makes you sleep better at night I guess.

I have been on this forum for over 2 years and the majority know it is not cheating. But whatever makes you sleep better at night I guess.

I never made a comparison to throwing money away and throwing time away. If you want to buy tokens, that's your issue, if you have the money to waste, it's NOT cheating, losing on purpose IS cheating. Mebbies it's all in the character of the person, personally I cant bring myself to lose on purpose, eternal optimist perhaps, or mebbies that it IS just a gemme and I dont put thought into it. Win = great, lose = oh well, it's just a dumbass FB gemme. But still, it's fun....

Plus I'm not wrong, this isn't a right or wrong issue, it's opinions, my opinon is that's it's a form of cheating, your opinion is, that it's not....opinions, learn to be objective....

Isn't real sports teams tank to get a better draft?

If spurs didn't drafted tim on the first pick (because of an abnormally bad season) they won't have won so many NBA titles, is that cheating?

well you are wrong yet again - this is a right or wrong issue. Tanking is a strategy, just as buying tokens is. But if you want to call tanking cheating then buying tokens is cheating. They are both strategies to win. Whether you win or lose or buy tokens or not, everything you do in this game is for the sole purpose of winning. Some have to buy tokens to win, others have to lose to win.

How you cant understand that is beyond me.

And the audacity of you, saying I have to learn to be objective, when you cant be objective to save your life.
