For sure, your approach/philosophy about the game affects how you build your team, and there are indeed many ways to successfully play this game.
Oh, and those awesome training youngsters cause bidding wars after people have played awhile, they start to look for those, so they can go for more like 20 or 30 rounds. I hate bidding wars, I do prefer to spend my T on greens, so I look for guys less close to their next star, but then, I like to keep them awhile, I won't replace many players each season, except the first few where turnover is higher to generate $. In early levels buying Free Agents is a good way to make money by reselling them, and some are worth keeping.
I tend to sell in the first week and buy after the first week to avoid wasting T in wars, but I also know I have no chance in the Cup.
Improve your team enough to compete in the competitions you want to win, but keep in mind that Cup is based on Q, so if you have 5 star average top 14, you will be in a Cup with levels above you. If you have a more average team, your Cup draw will be better.
my level 2 team, which survives on in-game 35T only:

Ruiz, Morales, Simal and Rodriguez came with the team.
The other guys with 2 years I got last season, Ghaloom & Koch were FA's I kept.
I just lost in Cup, but am still in CL with it.
If you only want to compete in League, you can keep a much shorter squad.
Yes don't waste T on speeding up building or personal trainer, I think we all agree on that..
unless you have a ton of Tokens, then as you like.
