The reason people lose when they watch is that they are using counter-attacking formations that rely on their opponent having possession and then attacking quickly upon possession change. When they get the possession bonus for watching, their team becomes more vulnerable as they are likely getting caught upfield by possessing the ball more and committing overly to swift attacks as counterattacking tactics dictate.
