I bought a 4* 18yo last week and since trained him to 7* and half way through playmaker SA using 180 rests. Im only lvl 3 in div 2 and in 1st full season so is it worth keep training as he will lose a star next season anyway or should i leave him be, dont want to sell as worth peanuts in my division.

You made a big mistake with him: you should first give all the necessary positions and SA, and only after that improve player's quality. The more stars he has, the more difficult the training is.
7* is pretty much enough, though you have to have the whole team of 7* if you farm 30 green packs every day. To achieve that you have to buy 18 y/o fast-trainers, 2-4 players every season. In a couple of season you will have an awesome team.

There should be an option in your browser to show the desktop version of a site. You can do it there, the functionality is different.

Managed it cheers, do you think i should stop training his SA now then or carry on as im halfway thru, cost me around 50 rests so far

yes, continue next season when he 'll become 6*.
Stop his extra training, only give the daily.
His quality is good enough for whatever.
