I replay my advice last time into having MR/ML in your team. Also, he prolly played down flanks as well as you so the ND might have produced occasions but given them out aswell, while the 4-5-1 gave a stalemate at least but with your wingers out of play as if they focused the plays on flanks too, your central mids prolly werent able to prevent them going on flanks hence cutting out your ams.

I strongly advice if not having mr/ml to put on blue arrows while playing through middle (3-1-4-2), that you use the 3N-2W (blue arrowed)-2-1-2 or the 3-2-3-2 to pressure him. I'm pretty sure you'll overwin in the second leg anyways.
