    I'm guessing that you put your formation on the board and left it there so he has countered you by using only 3 defenders and a DMC, he did take a risk by playing them wide, the reason for that was to supply balls down the flanks to his AMR/AML.
    You have no DMC's to stop his AM's attacking your DR/DL, MC's are cancelled out player wise it then comes down to orders.
    When playing 4-2-4 or 4-2-2-2 as some call it you must use attacking mentality, forcing you opponent to withdraw his AM's back into a more defensive position.
    The best way to deal with that formation next time is: 3-2-2-2-1

    -------DC--DC--DC
    DMR-----------------DML
    ---------MC---MC
    AMR-----------------AML
    ------------ST
    If you match up the players you will see that your ST would be 1 v 1 every time he receives the ball from you AM's.
    Your own AMR/AML stop the DR/DL getting the ball down the flanks.

    4-5-1 V-Style => Attack the flanks.
