i think not counter formation ,that depend on your set tactic.
but counter formation was well guideline.
pl: i play top11 more than 2yr.
4-1-3n-2 the counter formation for me is 4-1-4-1......not work for me the 4-3n-2(aml,amr)-1
4-3n-3 my counter formation is 3n-5-2 v-style

Well, about a month ago I was thinking just to quit this game. I was like many here, trying to counter formations, which can be stressful, if you do not have all positions available. Then I thought, I am trying to play with 2 formations this season. 3322 and 352V. I learned that it was not a matter of countering formations, more of how you Set up your Team and what Orders and arrows you give, and if you Pay Bonusses or not. I think the reason, 442 is so Hard to Beat is because, you can Never Tell if is attacking or more defensive.
Either Way, I decided to Post some of my results, this Season. Enjoy and remember it is up to you, how you Set your Team. You will win Games and Loose Games. I am at end of my 8th season, won the league 8 times, cup 2 times, championsleague 2 times and I am playing in the final tomorrow. I also posted a pic from a loss, same formation, different orders and arrows, victory.

I won against a 35.6 quality team while I'm only 32 quality . I used the 4-1-4-1 counter for 4-3-1-2(him) , and I won by 6-1 dominating the whole match with only 54 ball possession .

Why does everyone ignore the 4-1-2W-1-2 formation? I am playing a 4-5-1 V style at lvl 2 with a very strong team (27 average). I have players at scout lvl too. That formation seems to beat me almost all the time. Moreover, it dominates me during matches, even when my team, quality is higher significantly.
Can someone refer me to a counter formation against this devilish 4-4-2 wide diamond (and weird) formation? I must win!!
