Based on what I have observed in this game, substitutions clearly cause a sort of re-calculation by game engine. This is ok, else doing substitutions would be like doing nothing as such to influence matches. But there are flaws in the system. Many times I have noticed substitutions resulting into immediate penalties like yellow cards, red cards, penalty conceded, free-kick conceded or goals conceded. The same applies for the case of a manager or a fan suddenly joining in the game too. It seems that the effect is not appropriate, and in some cases, clearly it is. For example, concerning this game, you may not be 100% sure that the substitute your made is the correct move, but how about a fan or the manager of a team suddenly showing up during a match, where a clear negative effect (yellow card, goal conceded, or other) is seen? How can just the act of a manager or a supporter joining in a match affect the supported team negatively so much that this results to immediate things like a goal conceded or a red card?, when in fact it should be positive or at most neutral? This is an indication of how much randomness there possibly is in this game.
