Definitive Illegal Formation Rules

I ran this formation last season:

mc mc mc
dl dc dc dr


I figured out it was illegal when my opponent of far less quality was leading possession 80/20, so i threw a striker in there real quick and won.

No 4-2-4 is not two wingers! they are wing FORWARDS! different positions in that the wing forwards are more attacking than wingers. for players to be considered "Forwards" they don't have to be Centre forwards, they are different positions within a band such as forwards, defenders. For example in the Centre back position there are normal CB's then there are sweepers who don't necessarily have to be set up behind CB's. similarly in the forward positions there are different types of forwards Target man, wing forwards, second strikers, poachers etc. a wing forward differs to a winger!

So... any ideas, why this formation is illegal? Away-Team-Manager was watching and Home-Team-Manager not, btw.

Same formation, no penalty.

I'd like to use a formation that most teams (club and country), used for over fifty years until the mid 1970's, but this game deems it to be an illegal formation. It was 2-3-2-2-1. there were Left Back & Right Back (DL & DR), Left Half, Centre Half & Right Half (DML, DMC & DMR). Inside Left & Inside Right, (MC & MC), Left Wing & Right Wing (AML & AMR), Centre Forward (ST).

But it is illegal because there are only 2 defenders.

Now that i can do some testing again, I set up with a 3-5-1-1 to test the midfielder/opposite field requirements some more

I'll do some more testing over the next couple days, but this seems to confirm the requirement of at least 4 players on the opponents side of the pitch.
