Never lose hope. It took me 15 seasons(only played 2 semifinals in this period) to win the cup again. And I did it with ease.Someday your team will be good enough for you to win the Cup :D

The game lets you the possibility to extend the contract(don't know why?),but the player will still retreat at the maximum age of 34.Perhaps you should demand him to pay the release clause as he left...

Hard training doubles the effect of the normal training. Instead of losing 8-10% condition on practice match let say,you will lose 16-20%. Also the gains are doubled and the injury chance is higher.
